Traveling with Diabetes
Have you ever wondered how you can still enjoy a wonderful vacation traveling with diabetes?
I know that I have asked myself that question, in addition to hearing it from my clients! Traveling with diabetes may include more planning and preparation.
When I think about a vacation what comes to my mind is relaxing, eating delicious meals, time with friends, family, or alone time, reading books, and letting my body rest. What comes to your mind when you think of vacation?
Managing blood sugars on the road
Managing your blood sugars while traveling with diabetes is part of your life, inclusive of vacations and holidays. The symptoms of high blood sugar, such as dizziness, dry mouth, fatigue, and blurry vision, can make your vacation time less fun.
So, let’s see what you could do to manage your blood sugars and enjoy a fantastic vacation.
Tips for managing diabetes
These tips will help you enjoy a stress-free vacation.
1. Check your blood sugars while traveling with diabetes. Sometimes during travel blood sugars can fluctuate.
2. Take all medications as prescribed. A pill box may be helpful.
3. Drink water. This cannot be emphasized enough! Ask your Registered Dietitian (RD) how much you need to drink and bring a reusable water bottle.
4. Joyful movement. Have fun walking and checking out the scenery. Vacation is a great time to start a daily joyful movement habit.
5. Eat all meals and snacks while traveling with diabetes. Enjoy the local foods, and keep in mind the plate model!
6. Adequate sleep. Enjoy lots of rest. Try to get 7-9 hours per night.
7. Know the nearest hospital or urgent care center to be prepared if you are in need.
8. Have FUN while traveling with diabetes!
